Thanks to Mike for the info that i can now follow up - re buying a flat, ive owned a house in sheffield for 21 years, thats not the issue, i want to move onto the canals but cant yet afford to stop work so need to find a mooring , i can afford the narrowboat but have been looking for a residential mooring as the advice seems to be find the mooring before buying the boat - im willing to drive so ill visit and talk to people. Thanks again

You need to come to the canals. They can not come to you. It is a pleasure to live on a boat but if you intend to remain in one place and can't find a mooring within commuting distance then I suggest you find a flat instead. If you simply tie up in one or two places you will be constantly hounded by BW with the threat of being refused a licence and therefore unable to stay on the canals anywhere.

However you could start with Calder Valley for Sheffield Basin, and take a walk through Tinsley and Rotherham - asking locally can open doors. If you cast the net further theres lots to choose from - even Sawley Marina on the Trent would be driveable within the hour. Keep an eye on BW Moorings too, via the http://mooringtenders.waterscape.com site.

im trying to follow the advice and looking for a mooring before i buy a barge to live on ,but then everywhere i read re moorings is giving me the idea there are no residential moorings , i need to be near Sheffield but now the plan to live aboard and enjoy a slower pace of life, meet new people and learn more about the canals seem a long way off if waiting lists of 3 yrs seem the norm! is it really so difficult, should i go ahead and move around with a lisence and wait until i can find a mooring.
